HP LaserJet refuses to print in grayscale when color toner is out

Problem: HP LaserJet CP3525n refused to print black and white documents when one of the color cartridges was out of toner, despite “Color supplies out” setting was set to “Autocontinue black”.

Solution: go to Menu > Configure device > System setup and set “Replace supplies” to “Override at out 1“. Read the warning, set the limit and you’re done.

Please note that this setting is not available through web-configurator! (That was the tricky part for a lazy person like me). Use the printer’s menu.

Thank you, this was very useful. For me setting the “Color supplies out” only worked fine, I just couldn’t find it. It was in the web configuration:

Settings > Configure Device > System Setup

unfortuantely having this issue with an hp 4650. The replace supplies does not have an option, only “supplies low, (stop, continue) it is set to continue and autocontinue black. It printed a few jobs then stopped int he middle of one and hasn’t printed anything since.
